It’s one of them comedies

In movie theaters, the previews can be sort of an early warning system.
The goal is to choose ones that appeal to the people who came to see this feature. Classy previews? You’re probably getting an arty movie.
So there I was, ready for “One of Them Days,” a comedy. One preview had guys stranded underwater … One had a ballerina learning to be a fierce fighter. (That gives an ominous feel to “The Nutcracker” ballet) … One had a killer slaying couple’s on Valentine’s Day … And one topped that by having the same youths being killed over and over and …
Hey, was I in the wrong theater? Is the feature one of them slasher films?
Fortunately, no. After a so-so start, “One of Them Days” is fun.
This focuses on two roommates. One (Keke Palmer, right) is a luckless waitress; the other (Sza, left) is a clueless artist.
Now they must come up with rent money or be evicted by the end of the day. The fun begins.
“One of Them Days” is wise enough to scatter in some comedy pros. It has Katt Williams outside a payday loan place, Janelle Joseph (“Abbott Elementary”) at a blood bank, Lil Rel Howry as a shoe-buyer.
Sza and director Lawrence Lamont have done plenty of music videos, but both are making their movie debuts. That turns out fine, thanks to the experienced folks nearby.
The writer (Syreeta Singleton), the producer (Issa Rae) and some of the actors all worked on cable’s “Insecure.” They know how to find the laugh without (usually) going overboard.
And Palmer, 31, has been doing great work for 20 years, on dramas and comedies. This one is a comedy … even if the previews want dark drama.
