Best-bets for Jan. 12: Two of PBS’ best dramas arrive

1) “Miss Scarlet” season-opener, 8 p.m., PBS. For four seasons, Eliza Scarlet was the smartest person in the room, a detective linking with the police to solve crimes in Victorian London. 2) “All Creatures Great and Small” season-opener, 9 p.m., PBS. As World War II continues, lives are in disarray. James is training to be a pilot, Tristan is overseas and Siegfried is handling the veterinary practice, with an assistant who’s mostly book-smart. And Mrs. Hall, his housekeeper, scrambles for her role. It’s a solid start to an excellent season.

3) Football. The pro playoffs leap between three networks. CBS has the Broncos (10-7) and Bills (13-4) at 1 p.m. ET, Fox has the Packers (11-6) and Eagles (14-3) at 4:30 and NBC has the Commanders (12-5) and Bucs (10-7) at 8. ABC gets its turn Monday, with the Vikings and Rams.

4) “Mayfair Witches,” 9 p.m., AMC. In last week’s season-opener, Lasher grew to adulthood and killed a Mayfair woman. He said it was an accident; we (and Rowan) doubted it. Now the crisis expands. This is written, filmed and acted with rich detail, but it has a scene (involving Harry Hamlin’s character) that’s horribly grotesque, even by witchly standards.

5) ALSO: At 8 p.m., three networks rerun series-openers. Fox has “Doc,” a terrific drama. CBS has the strong, two-hour start of “NCIS: Origins,” with the third episode at 10. ABC has the comedy “Shifting Gears”; at 8:30, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are dog-owners in “Marley and Me” (2008).
