1) “The Equalizer,” 8 p.m., CBS. The fifth-season opener is still five weeks away, so the show goes back to a much earlier episode. This is the second one of the fourth season, with a young girl killed during an illegal street race. Robyn probes the crash (shown here) and her daughter considers a military career.
2) “Have I Got News for You,” 9 p.m. ET, CNN. Boosted by perfect timing, this got off to a good start last week. It was four days after the presidential debate, providing endless material for a comedy quiz show. This did leave some doubts: The scoring system was iffy and the targets were too easy. We’ll see how it goes this time.
3) “48 Hours” season-opener, 9 and 10 p.m., CBS. The 37th season starts with two stories, one of which sprawls over decades. Sarah Anne Wood was 12 when she disappeared on her way home from school. Lewis Lent confessed to killing her and drew a map of where he said he put her body, but police couldn’t find it. They continue to push for information.
4) Football. ABC has the best primetime match-up, with Tennessee (ranked No. 6) at Oklahoma (No. 15) at 7:30 p.m. ET. Earlier, it’s Southern California (No. 11) at Michigan (No. 18), at 3:30 on CBS; and Utah (No. 12) at Oklahoma State (No. 14), at 4 on Fox.
5)ALSO: Movies at 8 p.m. include “Descendants: The Rise of Red” (a flawed but zesty musical) on the Disney Channel and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (winner of seven Oscars, including best picture) on HBO. And tonight has the season’s last “Saturday Night Live” rerun. The 50th season starts next week, with Jean Smart as host and Jelly Roll as music guest.
