1) “Celebrity Family Feud,” 8 p.m. ABC. Here are the top runners-up in “American Idol” history. Clay Aiken lost to Ruben Studdard, then sold five million records, Katharine McPhee lost to Taylor Hicks, then starred in TV’s “Smash” and “Scorpion” (shown here). Both also reached Broadway. Now they compete; so do Fat Joe and “Fluffy” Iglesias.
2) Olympics, NBC has lots of live events, including women’s diving at 9 a.m. ET and track at 1:35, with medals in women’s 200-meter and men’s 1500, plus semi-finals in men’s 400 and women’s 400 hurdles. Beach volleyball is 2:15 p.m. on USA, 4 p.m., NBC. And everything reappears in the wrap-up, from 8-11 p.m.
3) “The Gods of Tennis” conclusion, 9 p.m., PBS. For 12 years, two women dominated the tennis rankings. They had 80 matches, with Martina Navratilova beating Chris Evert 43 times. They were doubles partners, yet opposites — an emotional Czech (and outed lesbian), longing for the acceptance of a quiet American. It’s a great story.
4) “Descendants” (2015), 8 p.m., Disney Channel. This has been a clever idea – bright-eyed musicals, centering on the offspring of fairy-tale villains and heroes. After a five-year gap, the fourth one (a fairly good one) is on Disney+ and reaches this channel Friday. First, the previous three (2015, 2017, 2019) rerun, one per night.
5) More movies. Here are two with brilliant screenplays. Aaron Sorkin wrote “The Social Network” (2010); it’s at 6:56 p.m. on HBO; Gillian Flynn adapted “Gone Girl” (2014) from her novel; it’s 7:30 p.m. on E.
