1) Olympics. The first weekend concludes with medals today in swimming, skateboarding (shown here) and more, plus early rounds in everything from basketball and soccer to volleyball (indoor and outdoor) and gymnastics. During the day, everything’s live on NBC, USA, CNBC, Peacock and beyond. Then NBC repackages the day, from 8-11 p.m.
2) “Hotel Portofino” season-opener, 8 p.m., PBS. Yes, it’s good to have the return of an ambitious series, set at a gorgeous hotel. BUT … this is late in 1929. Here in Italy, Fascism is growing; elsewhere, Wall Street is wobbling. “Portofino” has often slid into soap-opera excess; this year, it adds dark scoops of melodrama.
3) “Grantchester,” 9 p.m., PBS. A terrific show has one of its weakest episodes. The main mystery is brushed aside quickly, with a sudden and unforced confession. That leaves room for a couple of so-so side stories, one of which points us toward next week’s season-finale.
4) “Tulsa King,” 8 p.m., CBS. Looking to expand his new domain, Dwight (Sylvester Stallone) spots a fresh opportunity. Also, an errand has an explosive result. That’s followed by “Big Brother” and, at 10, a “Tracker” search for a 14-yer-old whose dad has a crimiinal record.
5) ALSO: At 8 p.m., CW has a two-hour K-Pop concert. At 9, ABC has “The Mighty Ducks” (1992), with Emilio Estevez as a scheming lawyer, forced to coach a youth hockey team. And Freeform has Disney cartoons, from “Lady and the Tramp” (1955) at 9:30 a.m. ro “Turning Red” (2022) and “Encanto: (2021), at 7:40 and 9:45 p.m.
