1) “Lady in the Lake” opener, Apple TV+. In a 30-year career, Natalie Portman (shown hwew) has ranged from epic (three “Star Wars” films, three “Thor: ones) to artful (an Oscar for “Black Swan” and two more nominations). But except for brief visits, she’s skipped TV. Now, at 43, she stars in this seven-parter, as a housewife-turned-journalist, probing a murder.
2) More streaming. Peacock adds “Abigail,” which offers a handy lesson: Never kidnap a gangster’s daughter, especially if vampires are involved. It’s a comedy and has Kathryn Newton, who was excellent in another horror-comedy, “Lisa Frankenstein.” Also today, Amazon has a sequel to the Spanish-language seroes that became “Ugly Betty.”
3) “Blue Bloods,” 10 p.m., CBS. Aidan Quinn had a meaty guest role as an ex-detective, ready to take things into his own hands when a rape suspect he arrested is let free. That rerun follow one on “SWAT,” that (barring a late change) involves a sniper terrorizing Los Angeles.
4) “Goonies” (1985) and “Gremlins” (1984), 8 and 10:30 p.m., Paramount Network. Stephen Spielberg kept elevating “genre films” – giving them lush looks and great craftsmanship That included these films he produced (but didn’t direct) – a kids’ adventure and a horror film. A non-Spielberg gem is Ryan Reynolds’ “Free Guy” (2021), 8 p.m. on FX.
5) ALSO: At 8 p.m., CW has the season-finale of “The Big Bakeover” … Starz has the season’s second “Serpent Queen,” with Catherine trying to preserve a precarious peace … And NBC has a special, interviewing U.S. athletes who will be at the Olympics, a week from today.
