Some new– or almost-new — titles are up for the top prize in the Television Critics Association awards.
“Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shogun” – each in its first (or only) year – are nominated for program of the year. They’re jpined by three returning shows – “Hacks,” “The Bear” and “Reservations Dogs” (shown here) … which is seeking some belated awards glory, after its third and final season.
The awards (which will be presented July 12) indicate the complications for shows that defy category. “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs” are nominated as comedies (which they sometimes are); “Fargo,” “Ripley” and “Baby Reindeer” are in both the category for drama (alongside series) and the one for movies and mini-series.
The other nominated dramas are “Fallout,” “Ripley,” “Baby Reindeer” and “True Detective.” The other nominated comedies are “Hacks,” “Girls5Eva,” “We Are Lady Parts” and “Abbott Elementary.”
And yes, that puts “Abbott” in its usual lonely spot: Among the 30 nominees in five top categories, it’s the only one on a broadcast network. Others are on streamers, HBO (shared with the Max streamer), FX (with Hulu) and Showtime (with Paramount+).
Here are the nominees in those categories:
— Program of the year: “Hacks,” HBO/Max; “Ripley” and “Baby Reindeer,” Netflix; “Shogun,” “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs,” FX/Hulu.
— Comedu: “Hacks,” HBO/Max; “Abbott Elementary,” ABC; “Girls5Eva,” Netflix; “We Are Lady Parts,” Peacock; “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs,” FX/Hulu.
