At a time when way too many shows are being canceled, there’s some good news.
In a short burst, there were separate announcements about the renewal of “Frasier” on Parmount+, “True Detective” on HBO and “All Creatures Great and Small” (shown here) on PBS.
Those last two were expected, but they come with surprise details. The shows are:
— “All Creatures Great and Small,” a gentle hit in its first four seasons, was expected to be back. While renewing it, however, PBS’ “Masterpiece Theatre” added that Callum Woodhouse will return to the show. He was gone for the entire fourth season, after his character (Tristan) joined the military for World War II.
— “Frasier” revives a show that once thrived, winning a record 37 Emmys, including five straight for best comedy. It had been off the air for 20 years, when the Paramount+ streamer ordered 10 episodes, with Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) moving back home to Boston. Reactions were mixed, but now there will be a second season.
— “True Detective” is an anthology that has popped on and off the line-up. The first two seasons were in 2014 and 2015, the third in 2019. The fourth – with Jodie Foster in the Arctic – concluded Friday, drawing strong reviews. Now HBO has said Issa Lopez, the writer-producer for that edition, will do the same for the next one.
