In the tangled TV world, consider this:
— Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” (shwon here) is simultaneously up for best-comedy-series awards for its second season and its third season.
— It will learn about the third-season results a week BEFORE the second-season ones.
— And a week before that, its first season will rerun on ABC.
That was the most bizarre twist in the Globes nominations, which came out today. Otherwise, things were sort of as expected: “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” mega-hits that arrived the same day, led the movie nominations; they’re in separate categories (dramas and comedies-or-movies), so they could both win. In TV, the final “Succession” season dominates dramas.
But then there’s that quirk in timing:
The Emmys involve shows that aired by May 31. Voting was concluded in August, but the ceremony was delayed by the actors’ strike; it will be Jan. 15 on Fox.
The Globes, however, involve anything that airs this calendar year; it will be Jan. 7 on CBS and Paramount+. That puts the “Only Murders” schedule like this:
— Jan. 2: The first season begins its four-Tuesday run on ABC A two-hour spot will have three episodes each on Jan. 2, 9 and 16, with the finale on Jan. 23,
— Jan. 7. The third season is up for Golden Globes. That includes best comedy-or-drama, plus acting awards for all three of its stars – Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez(shown here, left to right) – plus Meryl Streep, who joined the cast this year.
— Jan. 15: The second season is up for Emmys. That includes best comedy, but the only acting nods are for Short and for guest star Nathan Lane.
So, uh … what season are we nominated for?
