Two broadcast networks have now set tributes to the late Norman Lear on Friday.
CBS will have a new hour at 8 p.m.; many PBS stations will rerun a 2016 “American Masters” profile at 9.
Lear wrote and produced “All in the Family” (shown here) and other shows that nudged TV into its first golden age of comedy. After his death Tuesday, at 101, several mini-networks scheduled tributes. Now two larger ones have also jumped in; the list includes:
— Ongoing: The Pluto streaming service has marathons on three channels – “All in the Family” on Classic TV: Families; “Maude” on Classic TV Comedies; and “Sanford and Son” and “The Jeffersons” on Black Classics.
— Friday (Dec. 8): “Norman Lear: A Life on Television,” 8 p.m., CBS. This includes new interviews with Jimmie Walker (“Good Times”) and Mackenie Phillips (“One Day at a Time”), plus previous interviews, including one by Kevin Frazier of “Entertainment Tonight,” when Lear was turning 100.
— Friday: “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You,” at 9 p.m. on many PBS stations. It’s an “American Masters” episode that will also be available through Jan. 5 on the PBS app and on pbs.org/americanmasters.
— Friday: Catchy Comedy reruns a celebration of the 200th episode of “All in the Family,” a 90-minute special that was hosted by Lear. That’s 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT.
— Sunday (Dec. 10): MeTV repeats that 200th celebration at 6 p.m.,(ET and PT), then follows at 7:30 with the “All in the Family” episode with Sammy Davis Jr. The 8-10 Sunday slot is when it regularly has Lear shows. It will rerun Christmas episodes of “All in the Family” at 8 p.m., “Good Times” at 8:30 and 9 p.m. and “Sanford and Son” at 9:30.
— Saturday and Sunday: GET has marathons from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; it will be “Sanford and Son” on Saturday and “Good Times” on Sunday.
Those three mini-channels stream on Philo and Frndly TV. Catchy Comedy (formerly Decades) reaches about 55 percent of U.S. homes, often as sub-channels to stations owned by Fox or CBS. Me TV reaches most of the country, via sub-channels, DirecTV and some cable channels.. GET is also on Dish, Amazon Freevee and YouTubeTV.
