1) “SharkFest,” National Geographic Channel. It’s been almost a half-century since “Jaws” had a great white shark invading an upscale resort area. Now a 9 p.m. film tells us there’s a growing number of great whites feeding near Cape Cod. That’s one of three new hours about sharks (shown here), surrounded by reruns. One, at 8 p.m., asks if attacks are affected by sound; another, at 10, eyes bull sharks attacking a hammerhead.
2) “Cruel Summer,” 10 p.m., Freeform. Sharply written and beautifully acted, this offers a rich portrait of teens at play and in crisis. Sadie Stanley is particularly good as Megan, in three starkly opposite times tonight – a festive party for Luke’s birthday … a moment when their relationship transformed … and what would have been his next birthday, as the murder probe tightens.
3) “Bob (Hearts) Abishola,” 8:30 p.m., CBS. It’s been a strong season for this comedy, so we’ll have to excuse this so-so rerun, which stretches for laughs by exaggerating two characters. Bob, in mid-life crisis, buys a boat and detaches; a newspaper interview focuses on Goodwin’s success.
4) Reality shows. Fox pauses for holiday-eve reruns – the season-opener of “Crime Scene Kitchen” at 9 p.m. and the third episode of “Stars on Mars” (complete with a fire breaking out) at 8. But others have new episodes. That includes all night on ABC – “Close to Fame” at 8 p.m. and “The Bachelorette” at 9 – plus “American Ninja Warrior” at 8 on NBC and “Great American Recipe” at 9 on PBS.
5) “Independence Day” (1996), 7, 9:28 and 11:56 p.m., Starz Encore. You knew someone would be airing this film on the eve of Independence Day. Also, Syfy has the sequel – “Independence Day: Resurgence{ (2016) – at 7:59 and 10:29. Better movies show up earlier: Syfy has “Back to the Future” (1986) and its sequel (1989) at 2:59 and 5:30 p.m.; TNT has the first three “Star Wars” films (1977, 1980 and 1983) at 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 and 5:02 p.m.
