The CW network – in the midst of a year-round makeover – has finally set the rest of its summer plans.
Even before the writers’ strike, the mini-network (under new ownership) was shedding its expensive superhero adventuress. Instead, it’s going for unscripted shows or scripted ones from other countries.
An example of the former is “Inside the NFL,” coming to CW this fall, after previous runs on HBO, Showtime and Paramount+.
That fall line-up will have several Canadian shows, which are also key to the plans now (including “Family Law,” shown here). Here’s the summer line-up:
— MONDAYS: Right now, two dramas continue — “The Rising” (British) and “Barons” (Australian). Next month, however, this becomes a comedy night. On July 17, it will be the Canadian “Son of a Critch” at 8 and 8:30 p.m. and the British “Children Ruin Everything” at 9 and 9:30. A week later, the Canadian “Run the Burbs” is at 8:30 and the Australian “Bump” returns to CW at 9:30.
— TUESDAYS: Two superhero shows – “Superman & Lois” and “Gotham Knights” – have been slated to end their runs on June 27. Three weeks later, this will switch to non-fiction. “Down to Earth with Zac Efron” (which has already aired on Netflix) will be at 8 p.m., with “Fantastic Friends” at 9. The latter follows James and Oliver Phelps, the twins who play the Weasley twins in Harry Potter movies.
— WEDNESDAYS: Here’s the last vestige of the old CW. “Nancy Drew” and “Riverdale” continue through Aug. 30.
— THURSDAYS: This remains a catch-all, rerun night. On Aug. 3, however, CW will start showing past episodes of “FBoy Island,” the dating show that aired on HBO Max. It will have new episodes this fall, followed by “FGirl Island” at mid-season.
— FRIDAYS: Canadian dramas arrive July 7. It’s the second season of “Family Law” (with Jewel Staite, foreground, as a lawyer rebuilding her life and Victor Garber as her father and boss) and the first of “Moonshine.”
— SATURDAYS: “The Greatest Geek Year Ever: 1982” starts July 8. It’s a non-fiction show, followed by reruns of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” On Aug. 3, food shows take over – the fourth season of “The Great Chocolate Showdown” at 8 p.m. and the new “Recipe for Disaster” at 9 and 9:30.
— SUNDAYS: No changes yet. This currently has reruns of “World’s Funniest Animals,” “The Great American Joke Off” and “Whose Line is It Anyway?”
