Best-bets for May 8: a new “Jeopardy” and a 25-year movie

1) “Independent Lens: Sam Now,” 10 p.m., PBS. Reed Harkness used to make goofy movies, with his half-brother Sam as a superhero. Then he suggested something bigger – trying to find the mother who had vanished when Sam was in his early teens. The resulting film – sort of 25 years in the making – tells a remarkable story, with a deep empathy for Sam (shown here) and mom.

2) “Jeopardy Masters” debut, 8 and 8:30 p.m., ABC. After a flurry of finales, ABC takes an early leap into its summer fun-and-games mode. That starts with Ken Jennings hosting current “Jeopardy” leaders — from James Holzhauer (almost $3 million) to Sam Buttrey (around $150,000). Others are Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, Mattea Roach and Andrew He. The tourney runs three weeks (Mondays through Wednesdays) plus this Friday.

3) “Dalgliesh.” www.acorn.tv. A stately British manor became a museum that brought little money or interest – except for its room depicting famous murders. Then a fresh murder is found there. That provides one of the most intriguing mysteries for Adam Dalgliesh, the soulful police detective and part-time poet. It wraps up a terrific little season that has three movie-length (two TV episodes) tales.

4) “Fantasy Island” season-finale, 9 p.m., Fox. The second season of this reboot has had main plots that were blunt and repetitive, plus sub-plots (about the island regulars) that are worse. In this case, a cheating husband (played by Jason Priestley) is dealt with in witless ways. Also, a woman tries to keep her late mother (now a young woman) from departing with a mermaid. Well, you had to be there.

5) “Will Trent,” 9 and 10 p.m., ABC. Here’s a quick rerun of the season’s final two episodes. While searching for a kidnapper who has taken Angie, Will finally gets some key answers about his own troubled childhood. The show ends its first season strongly … and will be back for a second one.
