CBS has re-discovered Christmas – and has Mariah Carey (shown here) to prove it.
The network announced today (Nov. 10) that it will have a two-hour Carey concert, at 8 p.m. Dec. 20. She’ll sing in Madison Square Garden, including her perennial hit, “All I Want For Christmas is You.”
The show will also spread across the rest of the Paramount universe – on Paramount+ and rerunning at times (not yet announced) on MTV.
CBS used to rule Decembers, with cartoons – Charlie Brown, Rudolph, Frosty, Robie – plus movies and music. But it lost Charlie Brown (first to ABC, now to Amazon TV+) and shares Rudolph and Frosty with the Freeform channel. It also dropped out of the TV-movie business for almost a decade.
But the rebound began with two new Christmas movies last year. Both did well and will rerun this year on Fridays, Nov. 25 Dandec. 23.
They’ll be joined by three new ones on consecutive Sundays, ranging from bland and predictable (“Fit For Christmas,” Dec. 4) to clever (“Must Love Christmas,” Dec. 11) and in-between (“When Christmas Was Young,” Dec. 18).
That last one centers on a song written by Sheryl Crow. And now CBS also has Carey.
