In a time filled with terrific musicals, here’s some more good news … with a smattering of bad:
“West Side Story” (shown here), with seven Oscar nominations (including best picture) reaches Disney+ on March 2.
The bad news is for the notion of seeing films in movie theaters, where they belong. Steven Spielberg has turned this into a visual masterpiece.
But the good is everything else. At home, people can catch some superb musicals, including three with ties to Lin-Manuel Miranda – “Tick Tick Boom” (which he directed), “Hamilton” (which he created and stars in) and the wonderful “In the Heights” which he created.
More musicals are around the streaming world, including “The Prom,” the delightful “Come From Away” and even the flawed but interesting “Diana – The Musical.” And Disney+ is also preparing a fun (if flawed) TV musical, “Sneakerella.”
Then there’s Apple’s “Schmigadoon,” a delight that co-stars Ariana DeBose … who has an Oscar nomination as Anita (shown here) in “West Side Story.” Catch her where you can – big screen or small.
