For frustrated TV viewers, the pandemic may bring one plus – fewer cancellations of current shows.
At least, that’s the indication from CBS’ announcement today (Wednesday). In one swoop, it has renewed 18 shows — including such first-year ones as “Bob (Hearts) Abishola” (shown here), to go along with five that were previously renewed.
The virus shutdown came just as shows are usually shooting pilot films, leaving a question: Would networks take a gamble – grabbing a show without a pilot – or simply keep what’s already there?
CBS seems to be in a keeping mood. The network is coming off a strong ratings season and leans toward stability anyway, but this list is still extensive.
Earlier, “Hawaii Five-O,” “Madam Secretary” and “God Friended Me” had ended their runs. Major shows not renewed – and apparently headed to cancellation – are “Carol’s Second Act,” “Man With a Plan,” “Tommy” and “Broke.”
Renewed – now or previously – are:
– Comedies: “Young Sheldon,” “The Unicorn,” “Mom,” “The Neighborhood” and “Bob (Hearts) Abishola.”
– Cop and crime shows: All three “NCIS” shows; the Friday shows (“MacGyver,” “Magnum” and “Blue Boods”), “FBI,” “FBI: Most Wanted” and “SWAT.”
– The court shows (“All Rise” and “Bull”), plus “Evil” and “SEAL Team.”
– Reality shows (“Survivor,” “Amazing Race” and “Undercover Boss”) and news magazines (“60 Minutes” and “48 Hours”).
