Best-bets for Oct. 31: Laughs or gore on Halloween

1) “The Good Place,” 9 p.m., NBC. Ratings go down a tad on Halloween, so CBS’ comedies have reruns tonight. Not so with the NBC ones, which are new. “Superstore” and “Perfect Harmony” (8 and 8:30 p.m.) have Halloween episodes, big and busy and intermittently funny. Avoiding the holiday are “Will & Grace” (9:30) and this show, which has lunk-headed Brent writing an awful novel. It’s a clever episode, punctuated by wonderfully stylized moments in which Michael (Ted Danson, shown here) tells the story to Bad Janet. Read more…

2) “The Simpsons,” 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., FXX. When it comes to sheer originality, the annual “Treehouse of Horror” episodes are unmatched. Each has three stories, plus short bits; some are gross or gory, some are only mildly funny, but all are richly imaginative. Here are the firs 28 (through 2017), in order. Other marathons are witch-y — “Hocus Pocus” on Freeform (12:30, 2:35, 4:40, 6:45 and 8:50 p.m.) and “The Craft” on Lifetime Movie Network (4, 6, 8 and 10 p.m., plus midnight, 2 a.m.).

3) “The 13 Scariest Movies of All Time,” 8 p.m., CW. Dean Cain hosts this special, which asks the wrong question. More important than “scariest movie” is “best scare movie.” Lately, critics have focused on “Get Out” (2017), which drew four Oscar nominations, winning for Jordan Peele’s script; it’s on FX at 7:30 and 11:39 p.m. And M. Night Shyamalan’s films are worthy; his clever “The Village” (2004) is 8:30 a.m. and 7:35 p.m. on Showime.

4) “Halloweentown” (1998), 2 and 8:20 p.m., Disney. If you prefer something lighter, here’s the tale of a girl who learns that she’s a witch and the townspeople (including Debbie Reynolds) are supernatural. It’s sequels are at 3:35, 5:05 and 6:40 p.m.

5) ALSO: “Grey’s Anatomy” (8 p.m., ABC) has Halloween problems, personal — will Meredith make it home for trick-or-treating? – and broader: Skeletons are found on the construction site. Turner Classic Movies has horror oldies, many of them with Boris Karloff or Vincent Price. And “Doc Martin” (any time, www.acorn.tv) has a gentle episode set on Morwenna’s first day as a first-aid responder.
