Just as we’re mourning the imminent departure of TV’s best comedy (“The Big Bang Theory”), we get some good news:
TV’s best new comedy (“What We Do in the Shadows”) has been renewed for next season.
These two have little in common; one has ordinary folks and mainstream humor, the other has vampires. But both have what counts — unique characters and a wondrous wit.
For “Shadows,” it’s the droll humor of Jemaine Clement (half of the Flight of the Conchords duo) and Taika Waititi (the “Thor: Ragnarok” director).
They starred in the low-budget 2014 movie, but cast others – Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry and Natasia Demetriou – in the TV series. They also added two terrific characters – Guillermo (Harvey Guillen, shown here with Novak), the ever-faithful aide; and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), an energy vampire who can drain the energy from a room.
Last week’s episode saw the visiting Baron insist on a night on the town, with disastrous results. That reruns at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 8) on FX, sandwiched by the new episode – written by Clement, directed by Waititi — at 10 and 11: Charged with causing the Baron’s demise, these people go on trial, with famous vampires showing up.
There will be three more new episodes, through May 29. And, we now know, there will be some more next season.
